5 Steps to Build the RIGHT Brand (& Business)

As a small business owner, the steps to build the right brand are the same as the steps to build your successful business.

I know, I know...all these branding experts have been trying to convince you that your brand is this whole other thing you have to figure out for your business to get to six figures. Or wherever you're trying to get to.

Not true.

The steps to build the right brand are the same as the steps to just simply build the right business.

Being yourself and sharing your personality is part of that.

Figuring out who you serve and what you offer is a part of that.

And being visible and sharing content—what I call your “brand in action” or how others in the world experience your brand—is part of these steps, too.

At the core, your marketing and brand go together…you can’t have one without the other.

So when I say "here are the 5 steps to build the RIGHT brand"...I'm also saying here are the ONLY five steps you need to figure out in your business PERIOD.

No fancy branding needed.

5 Steps to Build the RIGHT Brand

1) Understand Who You’d Love to Serve

Find your target audience, ideal client, or target market—whatever you want to call it. Just figure out who’s a perfect fit for your business. Look at past clients, dream up someone you'd like to work with, or take a shortcut and check your Human Design chart.

2) Figure Out What Problem You Can Solve for Them

This is technically called your brand value proposition and positioning, but let’s ditch the jargon. When you can name the main problem your work solves for your ideal client, you’ve struck gold. It just takes some self-introspection and a Google search. I have my clients use a simple market research technique so they can see exactly what their clients are struggling with.

3) Create A Product Or Service to Solve That Problem

Often solopreneurs are so focused on “what” they do that they miss this important fact: people only buy when you solve a problem they have or help them meet a dream of theirs. This doesn't have to be hard. Look at your Human Design or what you know of your skills & strengths and put those into your package in a way that will help your client experience a transformation (meaning that they move from where they are to where they want to be). Problem solved.

4) Only Choose “Good Enough” Graphics

Don’t get hung up here. I see entrepreneurs stressing over colors and fonts. Your inner perfectionist can drag you into believing that the this shade of color will make a difference to getting clients. It won't. Your graphics just need to be professional ”enough” and to the point. Use inexpensive logotypes and pre-done templates. Plug in the right messaging & move on.

5) Create Quality Content & Share It

No brand can succeed without visibility. But don’t just yell “buy, buy, buy”—that’s cringy. You can use your Human Design to find yours, or do traditional market research, and create a message that resonates with your ideal client. Then share content that helps solve your ideal clients problems so they come to see you as an expert that can help them. If you can talk, you can do this step, promise.

It truly does not have to be harder than this to build a successful business. If you're getting hung up, don't despair. There are simple ways to move through each of these steps. So get some support if you need it, or just sink into letting this all be this easy.
